When the patient is admitted to the “Reception”, he/she is assessed by the triage nurse. The triage nurse assesses the basic vital signs; body temperature, respiration rate, pulse rate, blood oxygen saturation, measures the child’s weight and talks with parents about current problems of the child.
The registrar collects the child’s personal information from parents.
The child and parents are then asked to wait until the doctor or nurse calls for examination. The wait may take minutes or hours, depending on the child's condition and number of admitted children at the same time.
In the examination room the physician evaluates the child’s condition, decides whether he/she must be hospitalized and treated as an inpatient or he/she can leave the Emergency Room after some necessary examinations, tests and receiving appropriate instructions. The ER physician may recommend the following care by the district pediatrician.
Attention, parents of patients with long-term complaints or chronic illnesses must know that by applying to ER they can’t “speed up” their planned visit or examinations in specialized departments.
After the ER examination, depending on diagnosis, children may be transferred to specialized departments of other medical centers /i.e. some injuries, neurosurgical conditions, poisoning and other causes/.
