Endocrinology Service

Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that studies the functions and disorders of endocrine glands. Diabetes mellitus is one of the most important problems especially in pediatric endocrinology.

The Endocrinology Service of “Arabkir” MC offers consultations and treatment to children and adults with endocrine problems. The key component of the service is the Diabetes project, which started operating in 1996 with the support of “Semra” Foundation (Switzerland). The goal of this project is to provide children having diabetes with human insulin, modern self-monitoring devices, to monitor child’s health every month in order to prevent possible complications during the disease and improve the quality of life of children and adolescents with diabetes. Within the framework of the project the School of Diabetes was established, the purpose of which is to organize educational courses for children and their parents on self-monitoring methods, appropriate diet selection, etc.

The children using our services spend summer holidays in Aparan summer camp, which greatly contributes to their social integration and self-awareness. During their stay at the camp, children learn self-administration of insulin, self-monitoring of blood and urine glucose levels, participate in physical and various other developmental and recreational activities.

The medical staff of the project have been repeatedly trained in University Hospital’s in Switzerland.

Since 2005, “Arabkir” MC has been conducting newborn screening for congenital hypothyroidism for its early detection. All diagnosed patients are under follow-up care at “Arabkir” MC.

November 14 is World Diabetes Day
14 November
Since 2007, the birthday of the Canadian scientist who first used insulin to save the life of a 14-year-old boy has been marked as World Diabetes Day. Many questions still concern the public about this widespread condition. Irina Marutyan, Head of the Endocrinology Service at the Arabkir Medical Center, addressed several common concerns. Is fruit sugar as harmful as white sugar? No. White sugar is more harmful, as fruit sugar is primarily fructose. When consumed in moderation and at appropriate times according to insulin activity, its negative effects are significantly reduced. Is it true that diabetes occurs only in overweight individuals? No. Diabetes has two main types. Type 1 diabetes, which develops in childhood, is an autoimmune condition and is not caused by excess weight—though maintaining a healthy weight is still desirable. In contrast, excess body weight does increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes cannot be cured, but can it be fully controlled? Yes. While not curable, diabetes can be effectively and completely controlled with proper management. Does stress raise blood sugar? In people with diabetes, stress can elevate blood glucose levels and negatively affect the course of the disease. Endocrinologist Irina Marutyan encourages everyone to monitor body weight, stay physically active, and maintain healthy eating habits. Early diagnosis greatly improves disease management. Diabetes is not a disease—it is a lifestyle.
World Diabetes Day
14 November 22
World Diabetes Day was launched in 1991 and is celebrated on November 14, the day Frederick Bunting was born. He played a crucial role in the discovery of insulin. This is an occasion to once again talk about diabetes, its prevention and how to live with it.    According to the World Health Organization more than 415 million people have diabetes. It is predicted that by 2030 this number will increase to 551 million. The number of diabetic patients in Armenia is 110.000, 800 of them are children. This number is three times more than in the early 2000s. This has various reasons, among which the role of coronavirus and stress in recent years is significant. It is good that together with the morbidity numbers increasing, mortality rate has decreased by 3 times.  Doctors recommend checking blood glucose levels regularly and see a specialist in case of any changes. To prevent diabetes, proper lifestyle is important: physical inactivity and obesity are the main risk factors of diabetes.  The Endocrinology Service of “Arabkir” Medical Complex also serves patients with diabetes. Remember, that competent and proper control of diabetes is the most important thing in living with this pathology and maintaining the patient’s quality of life.
